Recently, I was going through some exercises at CodeFights, a website for learning programming languages. One exercise was about designing an optimal algorithm for filling discrete-sized “buckets” in an optimal way.

As part of a larger project involving procedurally generated music, I modified blargg’s GameMusicEmu test program for easier integration with other audio programs. You can find the program on GitHub as vgm2wav.

Last post, I presented some simple analysis of a database of metal lyrics. In this post, I want to present another fun product of that work: randomly generated lyrics.

For a little while now, I have been wanting to apply fancy data analysis methods to heavy metal lyrics. Most metal lyrics have a very specific focus on some topic not usually considered in songs you might hear on the radio (e.g., fantasy, rebellion, violence, or blasphemy).

Someone asked me to set up rApache on Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). All these instructions worked on 10.11 (El Capitan) though.
